ABT PROPOSAL WRITING WORKSHOP

DEMYSTIFYING “NARRATIVE”

It’s easy to give you a laundry list of pointers for writing a proposal, but with the ABT, we have a model that provides a more systematic approach.

Proposal writing, at its core, is about the three fundamental elements of the ABT Narrative Template which are:  SET UP, PROBLEM, SOLUTION.  Proposal reviewers need to know the basics of the system you are working with (the SET UP), what the focus of your research is (the PROBLEM), and the work you are proposing (the SOLUTION).

This three part structure underlies all facets of proposal writing. At every scale it is about set up, problem, solution. Working with the ABT gets you into this mindset.

DR DIANNA PADILLA, WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR

Dr. Dianna K. Padilla
Professor, Department of Ecology and Evolution,
State University of New York at Stony Brook

Dr. Dianna Padilla is a senior professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Stony Brook University. More directly she has served as a program officer for the National Science Foundation in addition to decades of writing and reviewing proposals. She has also been a part of the ABT Narrative Training program for nearly a decade where she has run various versions of this workshop over 30 times.

HOW THE ABT TRANSLATES INTO ACTION

In this workshop you will be taken through a series of exercises that are oriented at the fundamental mistakes made in the writing of proposals. The table below gives you a rough idea of the common mistakes, how the ABT relates to them, and the specific actions to take to avoid making the mistakes.

WHAT IS YOUR NARRATIVE?

“Where does your research fit into the narrative of your field?” This is one of the standard questions in NIH proposals. Mastering the ABT Narrative Framework will enable you to provide a powerful answer needed for this question.
