Research-Based Metrics
This tool implements the exact metrics described in Randy Olson's published research on the ABT Framework:
"The AND FREQUENCY (AF) is a measure of dullness. The NARRATIVE INDEX (NI — the BUT/AND ratio) is a measure of narrative strength. The optimal value for the AF is 2.5. A good score for the NI is over 20." - Randy Olson
AND Frequency (AF)
OPTIMUM: 2.5%
ABOVE 2.5%: If you range upward to 3.0% or higher, you're entering the land of And, And, And boring.
BELOW 2.5%: If you range downward to 2.0% you may be getting too choppy. Search the term "parataxis" for insight into this.
